The open and plural character of the university merely reflects the functional profile of the city of Valladolid itself, a historic city, home to a wealth of monumental heritage and one of the largest historical centres in all Spain, an eternal mark of the city that was once the capital of the monarchy in the mid-16th century. It is also the capital of the autonomous region of Castilla y León (the largest region in Europe) and, as a result, home to numerous institutions. Promoting countless cultural activities, it boasts a dynamic and robust industrial fabric spearheaded by the automobile industry, which provides employment to several thousand workers, and the telecommunications industry, sectors in which the University of Valladolid is involved through various research institutes and technology centres located in the Boecillo Technology Park, just a few kilometres away from the campus.
Yet, this is not the only hallmark of the city or indeed of the University of Valladolid. Both have emerged from a rich tradition in literature and humanities, treasure-houses of language, history and law, areas in which this age-old university has distinguished itself, and all of which have left their mark in the wide range of courses to be found in the modern lecture theatres in both the historic and new buildings which, firmly rooted in history, provide the best guarantee for the future.
