The history of the university vocation of Soria stretches back to the 16th century, when Don Pedro Álvarez de Acosta founded the University-College of Santa Catalina in El Burgo de Osma - Soria. Brief interruptions aside, university studies have continued ever since because, although the University of Santa Catalina was permanently closed in 1841, that same year witnessed the foundation of the Teacher Training School in Soria, the forerunner to the present University College of Education of the University of Valladolid.
At present, the university centres of Soria teach courses leading to six degrees in ten different specialities. The quiet and hospitable nature of the city provides an atmosphere that is conducive to studying and living, and its cultural activities, sports facilities together with its internationally recognised monumental and natural surroundings lend their character to an exceptional university environment.
